What is a Thesis Statement?

What is a thesis statement?

The thesis statement is a specific, arguable claim that sets the framework for your paper, and lets the reader know what point you are making about a certain topic. The body of your paper then provides the evidence to support your claim/thesis statement.

How do I form a thesis statement?

One strategy might be:

(1) Identify the general topic of your paper. The topic should only be a few words.

  • EX: "climate change" or "workplace leadership"

(2) Identify or pose your research question, or the question the assignment is asking you. The more specific the question is, the better.

  • EX: "What are the benefits of stricter auto emissions standards?" (more broad)
  • EX: "How will stricter auto emissions standards create new auto industry jobs and make US carmakers more competitive in the world market?" (more focused)

(3) Based on the information you have gathered (or brainstormed if your assignment does not require research), answer the question in about 1-2 sentences. This will be your working thesis statement.

  • EX: "Strict auto emissions standards create new jobs by _____________ which ultimately causes US carmakers to be more competitive in the world market because ______________."
  • Avoid simply restating the question: "Stricter auto emissions standards create new jobs and cause US carmakers to be more competitive in the world market." Be specific!
