About The War

The Vietnam War was an armed conflict between North Vietnam (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and South Vietnam (Republic of Vietnam) that lasted from 1955 to 1975 and took place in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Led by political leader Ho Chi Minh, North Vietnam aimed to unify the whole country of Vietnam as a communist nation. However, South Vietnam, backed by Emperor Bao Dai, wanted a unified Vietnam that was modeled after Western countries. North Vietnam succeeded, and the country was reunified into the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. There were around 1-3 million deaths during the war, with 58,000 being American soldiers. The United States of America backed South Vietnam, yet was faced with challenges on unfamiliar foreign lands and resistance to the war back home.
